About

John Marvin Scott is a musicology scholar, music educator, guitarist, and improvising musician. Currently studying Ethnomusicology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), John has established himself as one of Western Canada’s paramount musicians and in-demand music educators of the 21st century. Being an expert in short-neck plucked chordophones, John has over 15 years of experience in instruments that have strings and frets, including but not limited to guitar, ukulele, and bass guitar. John is academically trained in European classical guitar and jazz guitar while having experience in global popular music, West African music, Indian classical music, and East Asian music.

As a composer, John creates musical compositions under multiple aliases and performs with local musicians and groups across Western Canada. John's compositional style is a true melting pot of music, taking inspiration from all over the globe. His debut double LP titled 'The Capstone' reflects the dichotomy of the freedoms in music. Alternating with two ensembles, one performing compositions by John, and the other performing spontaneous improvisations, John is pushing the boundaries of what music can convey as an art form. John's latest EP 'Songs for Friends' takes inspiration from the guitarists that inspire the composer, bringing forward a positive notion towards learning from your friends and peers.

John's passion for improvised music drives his musical practice. John actively performs in digitals spaces such as Decentraland, Twitch, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, and Facebook. John's diverse musical inspiration allows him to create a unique blend of improvised art, performed solo on electric guitar.

John is educated by some of the top musicians in Canada, such as the Canadian jazz guitar legend Bill Coon, and Canada-born trumpeter and Yamaha artist Karen Gustafson. John has studied with a variety of other musicians and educators, such as Jeremy Doody in Red Deer, Jim Head in Edmonton, Brad Turner, Jared Burrows, Kofi J.S. Gbolonyo, Grace McNab, Bradshaw Pack, Ron Samworth, and more from Capilano University in North Vancouver.
