John's research covers a wide range of musical stylings and topics, such as freely improvised music, punk rock, and music appreciation. John recently presented his work Antecedents - A Case Study about Transitions in Freely Improvised Music at the annual Society for Music Theory (SMT) 2026 conference.
John’s passion for improvised music drives his musical practice. He actively performs in digital spaces, creates content for social platforms, and teaches through the digital space, all while keeping improvisation and musical exploration at the core of his work.
As a composer, John creates music under multiple aliases and performs with local musicians and groups across Western Canada. His compositional style blends his 2000s punk roots with global influences.
His debut double LP The Capstone explores musical freedom, featuring two ensembles: one interpreting his compositions and the other engaging in spontaneous improvisation. John's music is available on Bandcamp.
John has studied with some of Canada’s most respected musicians, including jazz guitar legend Bill Coon and trumpeter Karen Gustafson. His education also includes time with Jeremy Doody, Danica Hoffart, Ruston Vuori, Steve Sherman, Dale Wheeler, Jim Head, Brad Turner, Jared Burrows, Kofi Gbolonyo, Grace McNab, Bradshaw Pack, Ron Samworth, Jason Winikoff, Nathan Bernacki, and Eshantha Peiris.
